Comment on a news article

I feel that the article had broadly covered the topic, but not in details. The objectives of the article had been made clear, also, it was easy to understand the incident in a simplified manner.

How do I say that it was not comprehensive enough? For example, the transportation of "fake bomb", as a reader, I would expect to know how the government reacted to such situation. What I am interested about the article is that what was the motive of this? Futher more, they had not explained how the bomb was discovered, since it was being disguised as a wedding cake box.

However, the article followed the time frame of the incident well, keeping us, as readers, be able to know what exactly is going on.

Letter to the editor of straits times

To the editor of straits times,

About the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunamis, I feel that there could be a lot to be learnt. As a Singaporean, from the devastating damage caused, I feel that what Singaporean can learn is on how to handle such danger, and learn more life-saving technique, for example, preparing a bag filled with neccessities that could be used when such danger occur, or to look for a table to go under when an earthquake strikes. Even though Singapore should be safe fro such disaster, but such knowledge would stillcome into use some part. Singaporean can also learn to stay calm when such incident occurs, an important factor that Singaporean seems to lack.

Do the nation have what it takes to handle a similiar crisis? Frankly, I feel that the answer in no. It is not that the government do not have such capability, it is that they still lack experiences. However, even so, I feel that the deplomatic relationship with other countries Singapore had established would come in handy in future. If the nation starts working now, I am quite sure that Singapore would be capable on handling such situation

Significance of literature

I feel that the significance of literature in my life is that we can express ourselves in different manner. Using different kind of tone and the usage of words, I can convey my thoughts and feelings in that way. Also, literature is a form of entertainment, mostly when reading. I feel that it is really interesting to see different style of writing and how people play around with words and phrases. Then, literature to me is something that tells a lot about a person. From the person’s writing, you can understand what he/she is feeling. There is no correct definition for literature, only about how you express it. In my life, without literature, you can barely feel the emotions and thoughts of others.

Reflection on the founder's day CIP

Yesterday, we went for our founder's day CIP, in which we had to bring the old folks from the new horizon centre around the NTUC supermarket in Jurong point for a short walk. An old lady approximately 80 years old was assigned to me for the walk. I was shocked when I realised that the old lady could not speak English or Mandrain, but could only speak cantonese. As though I could understand what the old lady was saying completely, I had trouble conveying myself to her. I guess that she could have felt that way too. We had short discussion, and I tried to show my concern towards her as and when along the walk. As were about to enter the supermarket, the old lady complained that she had leg pain and needed to stop, hence, we stopped at a bench just outside the supermarket for a rest. We (me and by partner) were told to interact and chat with the old lady to ease her boredom. However, due to the language blockage, we were unable to communicate with her well. In addition to that, I realised I could hardly come up with any topic for the conversation to take place. Hence, we sat there, together with the old lady quite silently. After that, our walk ended.

Through this CIP activity, I realised that working with the senior citizens may not be as easy as we have thought it was. With comparison to little kids, senior citizens have a whole new set of thoughts that we have not been through. This had explained the difficulty in communication. I realised that I had to do a comprehensive preparation before any activity that I am not familiar with such as to avoid such a circumstance from happening again.
