Stereotype: Are all Hwachongians like that?

I feel that the post on stomp, about the students of Hwa Chong eating ice-cream on the public transport should not represent the behavior of all the elite schools’ students but merely the behavior of the students objectively. The writer stated that “Even elite schools’ students cannot behave?” in which I highly condemn as it was an early generalization of the whole cohort of students of Hwa Chong or even elite schools.
I feel that it had been unfair to the students mentioned, mainly the students of Hwa Chong and the elite schools as a whole. This is because the actions of the students who ate ice cream on the bus does not reflect the all the students’ action, neither does it reflect the education of the school. Any action done should be held responsible by the students involved and not anyone else. However, what the stompers responded was disappointing; they criticized not the students but the school heavily. To top off, they labeled the students of elite schools as “rich and spoiled” Moreover, the person who posted the entry circled the badge of the school, with the intention to highlight the school but not the student.

Hence right now, I would like to revoke their statement made, in which to prove what the stompers said were irresponsible generalizations. Firstly, they mentioned that the school had not taught the students properly, questioning the school’s education given to the students. However, with reference to a research done by the Australian Teenage Studies, it says that “teenagers aged between 12 to 17” tend to be more rebellious, and teachings are often futile. As such, it is proven that it was not the schools failure to educate. Moreover, with regards to students in elite schools as “rich and spoiled” However, nearly 15% of the population in the elite schools is under the financial assistant scheme and 67% under the middle-income. As such, I do not think that the statement made by the stompers were true.
I am highly against such judgment towards to innocent students. There is no evidence to prove that the school had not done their job in educating nor were the rest of the students just as bad. Such generalization can permanently affect the reputation of the school and is an injustice made on the students. The people should not hold their words inappropriately.

  1. I strongly agree with your point of view. To me STOMP is just a website that wants to evoke attention and increase publicity. All sorts of sensitive or even false incidents and inference often occur in this website. As their purpose was to attract readers, they would not hesitate to post things that are not true and things that will attract public attention. In this case, they successfully attracted public attention by using the Hasty Generalisation Fallacy, when they write as if all Hwa Chongnians are irresponsible and pampered students, when evidence states that only three misbehaved. I feel that their judgement towards students from elite schools was also irresponsible, as for the sake of generating more views, they actually promoted a negative image on elite schools. As what you have written, the post on stomp has unreliable content, as their purpose was to gain views, and their content was obviously false as in fact, students from elite schools are much more well behaved than most students from neighbourhood schools.

  2. I agree with what you have said. Actually I myself feel that the STOMPer who took a picture of the boy eating in the bus was just trying to evoke trouble and let our school have a bad reputation. They even made comments like all Hwachongians being so inconsiderate, and hence I feel that they should not do this as it is really bad to judge someone just because of some black sheep. Instead although I agree that they have done wrong, the STOMPer should have walked up to them and tell them that eating in the bus is prohibited, and not post it on STOMP. This will actually embarrass them greatly, which is rather inhumane, since they are just secondary school boys. Hence, although I feel that what the boys did were wrong, the STOMPer should still not post it on STOMP but instead tell the boys not to do such things on the bus. The STOMPer should also not stereotype and make such assumptions that all Hwa Chong boys are irresponsible because of these three people.

  3. I strongly agree towards your point of view and opinions against the stomp article. I feel that the STOMPer's aim taking the picture is to ruin hwa chong's good reputation. The STOMPer might be angry and dislike haw chong which made him want to express his anger by taking the photo. I feel that hi comments is totally unreliable and also bias. As you mention not all people from haw chong are rich, the STOMPEr's opinion was too bias and unclear. I feel that he/she should not have acted in such an irresponsible way to attract attention and achieve his aim. As everyone make mistakes, we cannot assume a person is bad or evil-hearted just because of their one mistake. The STOMPer posting the comment or the post is also irresponsible but can we say that just because he post that comment he is bad and irresponsible? Hence i feel that the STOMPer should not have make such assumptions and stereotypes.
